I haven't seen it on any Solaris 2.6 or 7 boxes. The various problems I've seen on Solaris 2.5.1 are ever expanding memory usage and very rarely the stutter problem. But mostly the memory problem. Using the exact same SE orcallator.se script on 2.6 or 7 does not generate the problem, so it appears to be a SE on 2.5.1 problem. However, only version 3.0 of SE is supported on 2.5.1. The SE 3.1 is only supported on 2.6 or above, so I don't think we'll get much help on this from the SE people. Orcallator.se is the data gathering tool that is run on each Sun system. In this case, it does not look like you are watching your web server statistics, so Orca is failing. This is a bug that will be fixed in the next release of Orca. For now, there are two solutions to the bug. One is to enable web server watching in orcallator.se on all your hosts. The second is to remove from orcallator.cfg the plot { ... } lines that mention web serving until Orca does not complain. The only think you'll probably want to change in orcallator.cfg are the html_* settings to be specific for your site. Cheers, Blair > > Douglas R. This will set up start_orcallator correctly with all the proper environmental and command line options to run lib/orcallator.se. While you can run `se lib/orcallator.se' by hand, it will not watch everything you want and will not save the data files onto disk, rather output the data to your tty. So you should run start_orcallator instead. Yes, you use the with-TYPE-log configure option. This will set up start_orcallator correctly with all the proper environmental and command line options to run lib/orcallator.se. While you can run `se lib/orcallator.se' by hand, it will not watch everything you want and will not save the data files onto disk, rather output the data to your tty. This should have WATCH_HTTPD declared to "-DWATCH_HTTPD", which is then passed as an argument to se, which then runs orcallator.se. Are you using start_orcallator? There is a program that comes with orca named orcallator_column that will display the values for a particular column if you give it the -c option followed by the column name. You'll probably want to run orcallator_column -c pagestotl -c pp_kernel -c free_pages percol-* and orcallator_column -c nfs_call/s percol-* If these values look fine but the plots don't, send me the percol-* files and I'll try to see what is going on when them. I re-write this file every 10 minutes, and I have the orca interval set to 500 seconds. I don't append data to the data.txt file. Anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong? In this case, you should probably change the interval to 600 seconds. You also now have the problem that the RRD file is interpolating your data to 500 second intervals and you're recording every 600 seconds. This can cause some missing data in the RRD file. If you don't have too much data, you may want to delete the RRD files and have them record new data. If this doesn't work, you can do a dump of the file and create a new RRD file. I don't know how to do this however. This may be a good question for the rrd tool mailing list. Also, the interval specified to orca is used in determining if a source data file is old or not and if Orca will print the warning you are seeing. Change the 500 to 600 and this should also go away. As for the NFS call rate, I'm seeing the same behavior myself on some of my systems, some 100 G calls/second. I'll take a look into this when I get a chance. Again, this may be a SE problem, since I'm just reporting the lr_rpcclient_t$calls variable. I'm working on a new version that can handle arbitrarly formatted text files, but that won't happen for a while yet. You could apply the following patch that would separate on commas instead of spaces. I don't currently have too many configuration examples either. It will soon however. There are several problems with this format. The first is that you'll have to convert the time of the day into a Unix epoch time (seconds since 1970) and to do this you'll need the date that the data was generated. Secondly, you'd have to tell Orca how to ignore the lines without data. All of this will be possible soon. However, the data produced is only rsynched to the web server every twenty minutes. To avoid the "file not current" message, I have set the interval in orcallator.cfg to 1200 i.e. 20 minutes. I am now concerned about an earlier message concerning RRD and missing data points. > You also now have the problem that the RRD file is interpolating > your data to 500 second intervals and you're recording every 600 > seconds. Is this relevant to this case? Am I better off setting the late_interval value to interval + 950? I would keep the interval at 300 seconds and change the late interval to interval + 950. I'm even not bothered about the old whitespace thing, and I reckon I've got some dangerous ideas, but I'll try to keep (most of) them to myself for the moment. 1. I am planning to collect stats on Oracle database performance as well as for Solaris hosts. I have created a sample source file and a separate orcora.cfg and run orca with this file and it all works fine. As I see it, this is the only way to go i.e new source file means new .cfg means extra orca running Is this correct? 2. I am thinking about collecting extra stats per disk (as referred to in the Paul Company's TODO comments). However, putting these stats into the main web page makes it half a mile long when you've got a couple of arrays. I can collect all this extra data with some fairly minor orcallator configuration changes BUT Is it sensible to run two orcas with different .cfg files looking at different columns of the same source file? Alternatively, without messing dangerously with the internals of Orca, can I display the disk detail on a separate web page? I hope soon to be able to offer answers as well as questions :-) Best Wishes, Duncan. -- Duncan Lawie duncanl at demon.net MIS - Demon Internet "The _bless_ operator simply uses the reference in order to find the thingy."
