Actually, I did quite a few things.  The only action
that "fixed" it was reinstalling perl from the very
beginning.

Then from there reinstalling all my other modules,
then going with orca, configure/make/make install/make
install_modules.  (I tried make
site_something_or_other before, and that one did not
work.)

This isn't that surprising, as this system was a test
system.  But, now, it all seems to be working as I
expected it to.
