[Orca-users] RE: Orca on many servers

Is there any recommend server spec for an Orca server. I will be rolling the
orcallator.se out to about 60 servers to start with and am wondering how
beefy my Orca graphing machine will need to be. I will need to keep 12
months of data at any one time, for each of the monitored boxes.

Of course -- most of us are doing this.

You run the SE toolkit/orcallator.se on the target box that you want to
collect data on, and then you automate a download of that data file to the
machine that's running the orca program.  I use rsync, which is pretty
popular these days.

Keep in mind, though, that if you have a lot of machines, you're going to
want a pretty beefy server doing the graphing.  Orca runs as a single
process (although it'll gunzip your logs in parallel), so if that one orca
process has to rummage through a lot of logs, it could take a while.

We ran into this problem on a Sun E450 (4CPU).  We ended up taking an
extra Sun E250 and, using NFS, letting it do some of the work as well (we
have two locations, so this was an easy logical split for the data).
