Here's a reasonable article on the size of the game industry, including
spread over PC, console segments, etc.

The article notes the level of risk aversion in the industry.

Ammo for the game industry's relevance: some say that money-wise it
matters more than film, and soon will matter more than music.  But I
always have trouble chasing down these claims definitively, so be your
own judge.  I certainly see games as equivalently important to film and
music, however.  That they will achieve that much within 5 years, is
clear.

This is a FYI, not invitation to protracted discussion.
